The English translation of the 24 solar terms has been controversial from the very beginning, and there are many different versions of the translation of "驚蟄".1. Waking of Insects1911年,加拿大傳教士季理斐(Donald MacGillivray,1862—1931)所著的《華英成語合璧字集》(A Mandarin-Romanized Dictionary of Chinese)第一次完整翻譯了二十四節(jié)氣。其中,“驚蟄”被譯為Waking of Insects。2、Excited Insects1912 年,英國外交官、漢學家、劍橋大學漢語教授翟理斯( HerbertAllen Giles, 1845—1935)出版了《華英詞典》(A Chinese-English Dictionary),他將“驚蟄”譯作Excited Insects。相比于季譯強調(diào)昆蟲蘇醒的動作,霍譯更加強調(diào)蘇醒后昆蟲的狀態(tài)。While MacGillivray's translation stresses the action of the insect as it awakens, Giles’s translation places more emphasis on the state of the insects after awakening.3. Awakening from Hibernation1987 年,由諸多天文專家學者組成的中國天文學名詞審定委員會出版了第一本科技名詞規(guī)范《天文學名詞》,在這本規(guī)范中,從節(jié)氣名稱的本義出發(fā),專家們提出了一套相對獨立的譯法。例如:考慮到春日蘇醒的并非只是“蟄蟲”,所有冬眠的動物都在此列,于是將“驚蟄”重譯為Awakening from Hibernation。For example, considering that it is not only the "insects" that awaken in spring, but all hibernating animals as well, the word "驚蟄" was retranslated as “Awakening from Hibernation”.4、Awakening of Insects2016年,中國申報的二十四節(jié)氣正式列入聯(lián)合國教科文組織人類非物質(zhì)文化遺產(chǎn)代表作名錄。同年,中國日報公布了二十四節(jié)氣的官方譯名,"驚蟄"被譯為Awakening of Insects。In 2016, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has inscribed China's 24 solar terms on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. And China Daily announced the official translation of the 24 solar terms, with "驚蟄" being translated as "Awakening of Insects" .目前,Awakening of Insects是驚蟄常見的英文表達。
