英語(yǔ)中有很多與數(shù)字有關(guān)的短語(yǔ)
有的可以根據(jù)字面意思直接翻譯
有的則與數(shù)字本身意思不一致
十全十美
中國(guó)人常常用“三”字表示多，例如“三人”可以“成虎”，“三折肱”就可以“為良醫(yī)”，“一日不見(jiàn)如隔三秋”，“士別三日當(dāng)刮目相看”等等。三的三倍是九，九當(dāng)然比三多，所以九牛一毛、九死一生等等，更是夸張得無(wú)以復(fù)加了。
對(duì)信奉上帝、耶穌、圣靈三位一體的西方人來(lái)說(shuō)，“三”則往往有“完美”的涵義。三三當(dāng)然更是完美得無(wú)以復(fù)加了。所以天主教的天使要分九級(jí)(nine orders)，天主教的信徒要有連續(xù)九天的祈禱儀式，英國(guó)倫敦更是連求救電話號(hào)碼都是幸運(yùn)的九九九。
總之，up to the nines對(duì)英國(guó)人來(lái)說(shuō)是“十全十美”、“至高無(wú)上”的意思
例如
He is honored up to the nines.
他獲得至高的尊崇。
現(xiàn)在，該成語(yǔ)一般只和dress一字連用，指“盛裝”
例如:

為了參加面試他穿得西裝筆挺。
酩酊大醉
sheet 的一個(gè)詞義是"系在帆下角的金屬環(huán)上的帆腳索"。如果帆腳索沒(méi)有系上扣，船帆就可以任意隨風(fēng)飄揚(yáng),船員們稱之為 in the wind。A sheet in the wind由此成為船員們一句口頭語(yǔ)，表示tipsy（微醉）。Three sheets in the wind 自然是大醉特醉了。
