以前指在演戲時吸引更多目光，也就是搶戲，現(xiàn)在可以運用到其他場合，如比賽等。
這個故事來自于 18 世紀的劇作人約翰•丹尼斯，他發(fā)明了一種機器，可以模擬雷聲作為舞臺音效。
他的發(fā)明在之后的劇作中被人使用，對此丹尼斯大吼，“Damn them! They will not let my play run, but they steal my thunder”（“該死的！他們不讓我的劇演出，但是他們偷走了我的雷聲”）。

不祥之兆
這里的 writing 是名詞“文字”的意思，the writing on the wall 字面意思表示“墻上的文字”。
傳說，古巴比倫國王設(shè)宴時，忽然看到一個神秘的手指在墻上寫看不懂的文字。預言家說，墻上的字表示“大難臨頭”。如預言所示，國王當夜被害。

discord 表示“不和、紛爭”，而這個 apple 指的是古希臘神話中的金蘋果。
傳說這個金蘋果上寫著“獻給最美的人”，從而引發(fā)了希臘女神赫拉、雅典娜和阿佛洛狄忒之間的糾紛。
所以人們就用 apple of discord 來表示“禍根”。

nutshell 是“果殼”的意思。據(jù)說，古羅馬有個哲學家目睹了《荷馬史詩》被謄寫在一張羊皮紙上，而這張羊皮紙小到可以塞進一個核桃殼里。
一部長篇史詩竟可以寫在一張小小的羊皮紙上，所以 in a nutshell 就被用來表示“簡而言之、一言以蔽之”。
