這個用法里的“turn”并不是像現(xiàn)在一般指的“輪轉(zhuǎn)”，而是表示“做好事”。因此，這個表達背后的意思是，如果一個人做了一件好事，那么就值得用另一個善行來回報這種善良。

這種幫助別人，然后得到幫助的想法比這個諺語出現(xiàn)得還要早。有很多寓言都是說的強壯的動物幫助弱小的動物，然后弱小的動物再幫助強壯的動物。就比如，獅子救出了一只老鼠，老鼠后又咬破了抓住獅子的網(wǎng)，幫助獅子逃脫了獵人的追捕的寓言故事。
