你們知道萬圣夜和萬圣節(jié)的區(qū)別嗎？
11月1日的是萬圣節(jié)，
英文為 All Hallows' Day，
是天主教和東正教的宗教節(jié)日，
而我們常見的Halloween其實(shí)是指萬圣夜，
也就是萬圣節(jié)的前一天晚上。
The name Halloween comes from a contraction of All Hallows Eve (Evening), the day before All Hallows Day. On this night it was believed that the spirits of the dead would try to come back to life!
Halloween是All Hallows Eve的縮寫。而All Hallows Eve(夜晚)是All Hallows Day 的前一天。人們認(rèn)為在這天晚上，亡者的靈魂會重新復(fù)活!
而到了國內(nèi)，因?yàn)榉g和傳播問題，“萬圣節(jié)”既可以指 Halloween，也可以指第二天的 All Saints Day。為了避免混淆，今天的 All Saints Day 在中文中有了一個廣泛使用的新翻譯：諸圣日。
所以，現(xiàn)階段的中文翻譯和指代也就成為了：
Halloween：萬圣夜(真實(shí)含義)/ 萬圣節(jié)(今日慣用)
All Saints Day：萬圣節(jié)(真實(shí)含義)/ 諸圣日(今日慣用)
我們都知道這個節(jié)日有很多玩法，而dressing up in costumes是最受歡迎的萬圣節(jié)風(fēng)俗之一，尤其是受孩子們的歡迎。按照傳統(tǒng)習(xí)俗，人們會dress up in costumes(穿戴一些特別的服裝，面具或者裝飾)來嚇跑鬼魂。除此之外，人們也會早早地雕刻好南瓜燈。
Their origin comes from an Irish myth about Stingy Jack, who tricked the Devil for his own monetary gain. When Jack died, God didn’t allow him into heaven, and the Devil didn’t let him into hell, so Jack was sentenced to roam the earth for eternity. In Ireland, people started to carve demonic faces out of turnips to frighten away Jack’s wandering soul. When Irish immigrants moved to the U.S., they began carving jack-o’-lanterns from pumpkins, as these were native to the region.
南瓜燈的起源可以追溯到愛爾蘭的關(guān)于吝嗇鬼杰克(Stingy Jack)的神話故事，他為了自己獲利而欺騙魔鬼。杰克死后，上帝不讓他進(jìn)入天堂，魔鬼也不讓他進(jìn)入地獄，所以杰克只能在人間永遠(yuǎn)流浪。在愛爾蘭，人們開始用蘿卜或者大頭菜雕刻惡魔的臉，以嚇走杰克游蕩的靈魂。當(dāng)愛爾蘭移民搬到美國后，他們開始用南瓜雕刻南瓜燈，因?yàn)槟瞎鲜钱?dāng)?shù)氐奶禺a(chǎn)。
而英語中對 "南瓜燈" 的叫法
也就成了 Jack o'Lantern
意思就是Jack-of-the-Lantern
